Eradicating Pests and Diseases in Baringo County

Baringo County Livestock Officer Lily Rotich has urged livestock keepers in Baringo County to embrace veterinary service in order to fight pest and diseases claiming the lives of their animals.

Speaking at at Nalekat market Centre in Silale Ward of Tiaty East while issuing 166 knapsack sprayers to eleven villages in the Ward, the officer said that the County government is donating the sprayers to the locals to aid them in the fight against common diseases caused by the pest.

Ms. Rotich added that the sprayers were going to help in boosting veterinary services in the region with the highest population of livestock in the County and is prone to disease.

Eradicating Pests and Diseases in Baringo County

The officer in company of area MCA Nelson Lotela and ward administrator Rhoda Lokwari said that the sprayers were going to help the livestock keepers to spray their animals regularly since it can be carried even as they move from one place to another in the search of water and pasture and they are water economical compared to cattle dips.

The area MCA applauded the leadership of governor Stanley Kiptis saying that it is committed in eradicating tick borne disease like Foot and Mouth and other contagious like Peste des Petitis Ruminants (PPR) responsible for mass deaths in animals.

Lotela urged them to spray their livestock regularly since it is the only surest way in controlling pests such as tsetse flies affecting the animals in the arid and semi-arid Sub County.

Ward administrator Rhoda Lokwari pleaded with the residents to be more careful while using the pesticides to avoiding harming their animals citing a recent case a where a farmer sprayed his animals with an overdose of chemicals that later claimed lives of more than ten cows.

Daniel Loktari a resident, lauded the initiative saying that it was going to help them improve livestock production in the area.
“We appreciate this initiative this is going to boost animal production here in Tiaty since our animals have been dying due to pest and diseases.” Said Loktari.

Loktari asked the County government to help livestock keepers in upgrading their animals by giving them Sahiwal bulls and bucks to improve milk and meat production.

Among the villages that received the sprayers include Nalekat, Akwichatis, Natan and Nadome among others.
